So, you want to be a driving instructor? That’s great! You’re on your way to what will surely be a long and fulfilling career. Many long-time driving instructors, even those at A-Class, will all tell you the great level of job satisfaction they get from doing what they do.

However, there are some challenges which come with being a driving instructor, some you may not have even thought of. It’s important to know what you’re headed in for, but by no means take it as discouragement. The good points far outway the bad.

The number one best thing about being a driving instructor is how highly rewarding it can be. You literally change people’s lives by giving them a skill which they will take on and use for the betterment of themselves and those around them.

Due to the nature of the job, you also get to meet all kinds of people so if you’re a people person and quite an extrovert, this is the ideal position for you. You will always be remembered by those people, too, as nobody forgets their driving instructor.

This may even lead onto them recommending you to family and friends, thereby providing you with more business, which is always a bonus. The money can also be great, but that always comes second in terms of job satisfaction overall.

We won’t lie, sometimes being an instructor can be stressful. Car crashes do happen, especially when you’re in a car being driven by someone who’s never driven before. They’re not common by any means, but it’s more a question of when rather than if.

While we like to think the vast majority of A-Class learners are pleasant people who simply want to learn how to drive, there are those who will give you a hard time. These include students who are demanding, hurl abuse at you, or may nearly cause an accident just for a laugh.

Don’t let this put you off, however. This is the trouble with all kinds of positions that involve interacting with members of the public. As we said, they also tend to be in the minority.

As a driving instructor, you are doubtless going to meet all kinds of people, which has its benefits and its drawbacks. The primary thing is to be patient and be able to mix with people and establish a strong rapport.

It may not be for everyone, but if you want a high level of job satisfaction, a reasonably good salary and to meet some interesting individuals, then it’s definitely the job for you!
