So, you’re about to embark on your first driving lesson. That’s awesome! Soon you’ll be whizzing up and down roads, eager to earn your full license.
But first, you’ve got to get past your first lesson, which for many is completely nerve-wracking. Not to worry, though. We at A-Class would like to help you feel prepared.
Here is what you should know before starting your first driving lesson.
THE HIGHWAY CODE
Sounds scary, but we don’t literally mean “you must know the Highway Code off-by-heart before you even get in the driver’s seat”. If you have time, it’s good to read up on the Highway Code so you can feel more prepared and impress your instructor.
As you go along, you’ll pick things up in general but there’s never anything wrong with any preliminary revision in either case.
YOU PROBABLY WON’T DRIVE STRAIGHT AWAY
As eager as you might be to drive, getting in the driver’s seat probably won’t happen for you straight away. In fact, unless your instructor is especially harsh, you’ll be treated as a complete novice and, at the very least, shown the ropes first before you’re expected to take over.
Once you do, the most taxing thing you’ll be asked is probably to drive down the road for a couple of metres just so you can get used to the different pedals.
YOU’LL NEED YOUR PROVISIONAL LICENSE
It might sound like a no-brainer, but make sure you apply for your provisional license well in advance of your first lesson. Otherwise, you won’t be allowed on the roads at all!
YOU’LL PROBABLY STALL AND THIS IS OKAY
Stalling can be the bane of every learner’s existence, making it a common problem from all beginners. Don’t let it ruin your first lesson as it’s a perfectly normal part of getting used to clutch control.
In general, it’s important not to get hung up on any mistakes you make in your first lesson. If you expect perfection on your first go, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Just relax and do your best. You’re here to learn, after all.
YOU’RE IN GOOD HANDS
If you’re worried about your safety, don’t be. Nothing bad can happen in your first lesson. Every driving instructor has full control of your car. In case you do something wrong, they can always step in and take over.
